Pearl knotting is a tradition that dates back to ancient civilizations. The technique was particularly popular in the Roman Empire, where pearls were considered a symbol of wealth and status. In those times, pearls were often strung with knots to prevent them from rubbing against each other, which could lead to damage.

In 2022 I took a great trip in Canada and ended the tour with a stay at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. There was a fabulous jewelry shop on the main floor, and I walked by it every day admiring a stunning baroque pearl necklace. The pearls were large and decidedly misshapen. But the odd shapes added to its elegance. It was simply strung - I imagine on silk - but the knots were large and a beautiful mauve pink. I lusted for this necklace. But at $12,000 I admired it from afar.
So, in 2023, I went on a mission at the Tucson gem and jewelry shows to find large baroque pearls. I finally found some that were beautiful and within my price point. They have sat on my desk ever since.
I wanted to pearl knot them and although pearls and a simple knot look like it should be easy - it is not (pun intended).
Then by chance this year I came across Kate Richbourg's Masterclass on pearl knotting. I haven't watched all of the episodes yet, but after the first two episodes, I grabbed my cord and pearls, and I could not be happier.
My pearl knotting technique has been perfected. I chose turquoise thread for the knots - not mauve. The clasp is different from the necklace in Canada. The pearls are very similar - and for a fraction of the price.
Let me know if you enjoy pearl knotting.
