Rituals are structured, symbolic actions performed in a specific order, often with cultural, religious, or social significance. They are typically repeated and serve to express shared beliefs, values, or emotions within a community. Rituals can range from formal ceremonies to everyday routines, and they often involve symbolic gestures, words, or objects. One ritual I got to participate in when I went to Japan was the tea ceremony. While I do not practice this ritual like it is performed in Japan, I do have a tea ritual of my own. I like to take about an hour break around 4pm from whatever I am doing and relax with a cup of tea and perhaps a little sweet. Sometimes this is when I will read my current book. In the hot summers here in Tucson I might sip a sun brewed iced tea instead.
But most of all this ritual really helps me relax.
I have been getting my tea from Murchie's tea company for the last 25 years. I am particularly fond of of their Earl Grey tea and one called Paris Afternoon. I am also addicted to their shortbread cookies. If life is giving me fits I turn to their chamomile tea.
Another ritual I practice every night is to give my pillow a spritz of lavender. I learned about this when I traveled to Provence back in 20?? I also use a silk pillow case and the spray is just fine on it ... no staining.
I guess my journaling is also a ritual. I like to capture what happened in my day and try to write something every night - even if its just one sentence. This book got me started over 20 years ago.
Finally my morning stretch routine that I NEVER miss. I have suffered from 3 episodes of sciatica, so this routine is non negotiable. I have been doing it for 5 years now and keeping the pain at bay.
I would love to hear about your rituals. If you have the time leave me a comment.
