Let them eat cake

Marie Antoinette was 37 when she was taken to the guillotine. She adored fashion and somehow she even managed to arrive at her beheading dressed in a pristine white petticoat. Her journey to the guillotine was captured in a portrait by Jacques-Louis David.

Marie is also known for her quote “Let them eat cake” when she was told that her starving subjects had no bread. Did she really utter those words? Probably not.

I decided that this year will be a baking experimentation year for me. I enjoy baking, but I don’t do it very often because I really don’t want high calorie treats sitting around the house. But I realize I indulge in store bought treats from time to time so why not plan my indulgence with some good home baked items. January will be cake month. I plan on baking one cake. So hard to choose, but I have settled on an “Italian Cream Cake”

Do any of you watch the Great British Baking Show? I got hooked during the pandemic and can’t wait for each year’s new season. It’s such a feel good show. I love to see the friendships that develop among the contestants, and of course I love seeing all the items that get baked. After baking this Italian Cream Cake I realize I need a lot of practice.
