Knitting has always been a hobby I enjoyed, and this year I discovered that beyond creating something beautiful, knitting also provided a mindful practice. I try to knit for a few hours every day now.
My current WIP is a sweater. Hope to finish it by the end of January
I think I gravitated to knitting in 2024 because of the highly charged political climate we found ourselves in. I found that as I focused on the repetitive motion of knitting along with the beautiful colors of the yarn, my mind quieted, my pulse slowed, and I entered a more relaxed state.
I have wanted to try mediation over the years, but never really knew how to get started. Every time I tried to “meditate” my mind would wander to everything I had to do or it would focus on the things that were bothering me. Knitting becam my avenue to meditation.
I have read that knitting can also reduce the risk of developing conditions like arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. There are lots of projects for beginner knitters so I highly recommend trying it. You might find its the perfect formmindfulness for you.
