I love my morning cup of coffee. And I usually indulge in a second cup. This summer I even branched out to iced coffee with a shot of vanilla mainly in the afternoon even though I run the risk that it might keep me awake. But I never got in the habit of a cup of coffee after dinner. I’m happy with just dessert.
This discussion of coffee started when I saw this image on my Facebook feed.
Drinking coffee has been linked to a better mood and some other good indications. But like most things, moderation is required.
Coffee also gets us together. It might be considered the first social media. How many times have you met a friend for coffee? You meet, not to drink the coffee, but to share your life, the good the bad, the ups and downs. But sipping a great cup of coffee is a perk (pun intended).
I like to use coffee as a diet aid. When I’m trying to cut calories and achieve a deficit, I allow myself a cup of coffee as an afternoon treat instead of the cup of tea and slice of cake. Even a Frappuccino has less calories and I try to drink just half.
I also have a funny story about coffee which sheds some insights to my parents. It was the 90’s and my parents lived in the Virginia suburbs outside of DC. Both of my parents worked for the government. They were not wealthy by any means, but hard-working middle-class individuals with some savings to invest. Their advisor came to them with a proposal that required a road trip to downtown DC where the advisor took my parents to a newly opened Starbucks. He treated them to a cup of coffee and tried to convince them to buy an initial stock offering in the company. It wasn’t a new company - Starbucks had been around for 20 years, but they had just gone public. At the time there were 165 stores nationally. And the advisor tried to convince them that the concept was really going to take off. My Mother explained all this to me in our weekly phone call and finished by saying she turned down the opportunity. “Who in their right mind will pay $3 for a cup of coffee?” Well, 4 years later there were 1000 stores (and we know what a cup costs today). If one had invested $170, which was the cost of 10 shares in the initial offering; today you would own 640 shares (stock splits) worth $93 a share or $59,520. (luckily, I did call my advisor !!)
So, it’s time for my afternoon Frappuccino. Yes, I’m on a mini cut from all those indulgences in Greece.
Let me know - do you like coffee?
Thanks for being here

When I was young, I drank coffee all day. As I have matured , I have 1 coffee in the morning , iced with creamer. I love the seasonal fruit drinks at Starbucks. Wish I had bought stock!
